A - Z Challenge [2016]

My Theme: Tips and Inspirational Quotes for Writers

U for Ursula

"Thanks to “show don’t tell,” I find writers in my workshops who think exposition is wicked. They’re afraid to describe the world they’ve invented.… This dread of writing a sentence that isn’t crammed with “gutwrenching action” leads fiction writers to rely far too much on dialogue, to restrict voice to limited third person and tense to the present."

- Ursula K Le Guin

  1. Oh thank god, not everyone wants to remove everything except action :)

  2. I think it's all about balance. I love the quote today. Bit scary though as I've done all those things with the exception of the last part :) I'm still here.

  3. She has such a great--and dry--sense of humor. A wonderful writer and a wonderful wit.

  4. That quote made me smile - especially the last part...really funny!

  5. When I first started writing and then publishing books, I listened to a lot of advice because quite frankly I knew little to nothing about how to create a story. I only knew what I loved to read and what I really wanted to write. I pay very little attention to people who give advice about how to write anymore. And I do not give advice at all. I did once when I thought I knew something. :-) However, Ursula is on to something. Tell it like it is Ursula.

  6. As a writer I discovered voice in the expositions scenic or character descriptions that I wrote. Exposition is just as important as dialogue but it has to blend in together.
