My Theme: Tips and Inspirational Quotes for Writers

O for Orwell

  1. That's a great quote from Orwell. I feel we don't appreciate him enough. Beyond 1984, few people read his excellent body of work.

  2. It's funny. I think George Orwell was conceptually brilliant (isn't big brother part of the collective understanding, after all?), but I'm not a huge fan of his actual syntax. And maybe this captures it. He was trying too hard. That may not be fair though--the whole period is a bit that way--it is my least favorite era stylistically.

  3. I hated George Orwell's works when I was at school having it rammed down my throat. Unfortunately, I've never ventured into his words since then. I must do. Overcome that dreaded feeling.

  4. I think the last sentence about "avoidably ugly" is something all writers need to consider at times. It's hard to face in our own work and too easy to recognize in the works of others.

  5. Every sentence? I'm glad I don't have to do that with the A-Z blog posts! I'd never get a post done. I already have a tendency to continue to edit and rewrite until I just stop and let it be. Unless I look at it again one day :P

  6. I've never read Orwell. Sounds like he tried very hard to perfect his style.
